Through the history of baseball there have been dozens of unforgettable mascots. Mascots are the harbingers of team spirit, and are always well loved by fans young and old. Here is a list of today’s ordinary furry friends: The Swinging Friar: One of the oldest mascots still observing home games today is the San Diego Padre’s Swinging Friar. He joined the team in 1958, when the team was still in the minor leagues. The Friar was part of the team emblem for the teams firstborn 15 years in the MLB. The bald zealot was dropped for a more corporate look in 1984, and was added to the alternate jersey sleeves in 1996. Regardless of representation on the team’s jerseys, the Friar has always been an essential face at home games. The pudgy bald mascot walks around the field swinging bats; whether he swings leftie or rightie depends on the season. Wally the Green Monster: Boston Fans love everything when it comes to Fenway Park, including their lovable green mascot. It wasn’t always that way, though: when he was introduced in 1997 for the outfield wall paintings 50th anniversary, older fans were slow to receive him as portion of the team. He may be seen dancing and doing cartwheels on the field and on top of the Red Sox dugout. Bernie Brewer: Though today the ordinary running sausages are the favored mascots in Milwaukee, fans still love Bernie, and older fans do not forget his initial antics. He became mascot in 1973. The jolly dude with a massive moustache had his own chalet above the stadium. Whenever the Brewers scored a home run he would plunge into a massive beer mug. In 1984 the bleachers were renovated and Bernie’s chalet was retired. He was brought back by usual demand in 1993 and his chalet was rebuilt above left-center field. The mug he used to slide into is now on display as portion of the Lakefront Brewery tour. Phillie Phanatic: The Phanatic was made to fetch more families to Phillies games, and it seems to have worked. The lovable furry green monster is a hit with kids and adults alike, and many times rides an ATV around the outfield for the duration of home games.
